The internation code 7 was assigned to the USSR. The Russian Federation retains the use of the same country code 7.
After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, most
of the newly independent states aquired their own individual country codes. The Baltic States - Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania -
were the first ones to change their international telephone codes. Soon other former Soviet Republics followed with their
own country code changes: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, and Turkmenistan.
However, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan retain the use of 7 as their country code.
