RUSSIA AREA CODES

Only large cities like Moscow and St. Petersburg have a three digit area code and a seven digit local phone number. A Moscow phone number will look like 7-495-555-1234, where 7 is the country code, 495 is the area code, and 555-1234 is the local number. More on calling Moscow and calling St. Petersburg.

The majority of Russian cities have four or five digit area code. However, the extra digits are somewhat similar to what is called prefix in the United States in that they identify the exact location of a particular phone number within the calling area. The extra digits in the area code compensate for the lack of numbers in the local phone number. For example, a Kirov phone number will look like this: 7-8332-555-123. The 7 is the country code, 8332 is the area code of Kirov, and 555-123 is the local number. Note the extra number in the area code compensates for the lack of seventh digit in the local number. No matter what location in Russia you are trying to reach, you will always dial the same country code 7 plus a 10 digits for the phone number.
